The Meru Youth Service (MYS) in partnership with Community Road Empowerment (CORE) under the Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) took part in a County Dissemination Workshop, which showcased the project’s impact on infrastructure development and job creation.
So far, 27KM of roads have been rehabilitated, significantly improving accessibility and unlocking new economic opportunities for residents. A key achievement of the project is the training of 1,250 youths in road construction skills, many of whom have transitioned into 50 fully registered SMEs. These enterprises are now equipped to actively contribute to local infrastructure projects, with MYS graduates playing a crucial role in this transformation. The inclusion of MYS graduates has been an exciting strategy, providing them with practical skills and direct opportunities for growth in the construction sector.
In support of these youth-led businesses, CORE is in the process of issuing sub-grants to strengthen the SMEs’ capacity, ensuring their sustainability and growth. The event brought together key stakeholders, including CECM Lands, Physical Planning, Urban Development, Housing, and Public Works, Monica Kathono, Chief Officer Victor Akwalu, CEO of Meru Youth Service (MYS) CPA Edwin Murangiri, MCAs from the Sectoral Committee on Transport, representatives from KURA, KRB, KeRRA, the World Bank, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, and National Government Administrative Officers, alongside directors of the newly established SMEs. Their participation underscored the county’s commitment to fostering partnership-driven development.
Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s administration continues to champion community empowerment through improved infrastructure and sustainable job creation, with MYS at the forefront of training and empowering youth for the future.
